Hawaii Electric Light Co. installed a new electric vehicle charger Friday at KTA Super Stores in Waimea.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. installed a new electric vehicle charger Friday at KTA Super Stores in Waimea.

“We’re pleased to have KTA Super Stores as our first host on Hawaii Island and applaud them for supporting electric transportation and clean energy,” said HELCO President Jay Ignacio in a statement. “… KTA excels at anticipating and meeting customer needs, and this partnership is one example of their commitment to give back to the community in which they serve.”

HELCO installs and powers chargers, while hosts offer space and some operational input.

State law requires at least one charger in public parking lots with at least 100 spaces. KTA in Waimea is located at the Waimea Center, 65-1158 Mamalahoa Highway.

HELCO also has chargers at its offices in Hilo and Kona. More host sites are sought.

“On behalf of KTA Super Stores, congratulations to Hawaii Electric Light for their leadership in bringing North Hawaii its first Level-3 DC fast charger to fruition,” said Toby Taniguchi, KTA Super Stores president.

Charging a “full tank” costs about $7 to $8 and takes about 30 minutes.
